d'Swarte Walvis

welcome to
D’Swarte Walvis

a unique restaurant

On August 8, 1965, ‘De Zaansche Molen’ association celebrated its 40th anniversary. On this day, a meal was served for the first time in what would later become Restaurant D’Swarte Walvis. Mrs. Bosman, one of the founders of the famous ‘Zaanse Mustard’ company and one of the first residents of Zaanse Schans, organized this dinner with sandwiches and soup. This is where the story of our beautiful restaurant begins…

historic setting

The three buildings housing D’Swarte Walvis tell us much about the rich history of the Zaan region. The kitchen is part of a Merchant’s House. The restaurant, the brasserie, the Regents Room, and the upstairs room are located in a former Orphanage. And in the Whaler’s Warehouse (warehouse for whale hunters), the bar and the Commander’s Room have been established.

On the Zaanse Schans

The Zaanse Schans is primarily a residential area in which the 18th and 19th centuries are brought to life. Despite the fact that visitors from all over the world visit this neighborhood every day, people still live here. Stroll past the famous windmills and enjoy the smell of fresh cookies, or take a look at the warehouse where clogs are made. The Zaanse Schans is a unique part of the Netherlands, full of wooden houses, mills, barns, workshops and our restaurant, D’Swarte Walvis (The Black Whale).

wonderfull interior

The charming interior of D’Swarte Walvis seamlessly intertwines with the rich history of the Zaan region. Upon entering, guests are greeted by the inviting ambiance of the restaurant, brasserie, regents room, and upstairs room, all housed within the former Orphanage, each with its unique character. A highlight of the experience is the Whaler’s Warehouse, where the bar and Commandeur’s Room transport patrons back to the era of adventurous whale hunters.
