d'Swarte Walvis

A MUSEUM OR A RESTAURANT?

We sometimes question ourselves: are we a museum or a restaurant? There are so many original and unique features to be found, it’s an experience on itself. Between the famous local mustard soup and your Caesar salad you can lose yourself in watching the biblical stories painted on the hundreds of small tiles covering the ‘smuiger’ (local word for mantelpiece). But there are so many more details of the past ages, it’s truly unique.

OUR HISTORY

The three buildings in which D’Swarte Walvis is located tell a lot about the rich history of Zaan. The kitchen is part of a merchant house. The restaurant, the brasserie, the Regentenkamer and the upstairs room are located in a former Orphanage. And the bar and the Commander’s Room have been realized in the replica of a Vleethuis (whaling warehouse).

TERRACE AT THE ZAAN

How would you explain if you cater the only terrace overlooking the Zaan with a view at the world-famous Windmill-panorama? Pretty much THE reason for many of the millions of people visiting the Zaanse Schans every year. Having a nice lunch in the spring or sipping on your Aperol Spritz at sunset, watching the sun disappear behind the 17th century ‘skyline’? It does not get any better than this probably….

VARIOUS ROOMS AND SPACES

At d’Swarte Walvis, there are several rooms with a unique history available for rent, including the orphanage/the conservatory, the vleethuis (the bar), the commander’s room (1st floor), and the Zaandijk Town Hall.

OUR UNIQUE PLACE
AT THE ZAANSE SCHANS

The Zaanse Schans is world famous and attracts millions of visitors every year to view the windmills and traditional Zaanse timber construction. The Zaanse Schans is a freely accessible living and working area as it would have looked in 1850. You will find seven (still working!) mills that you can visit, in addition to various museums such as the mill museum, bakery museum or the Albert Heijn museum shop. Right in the center of the Zaanse Schans you’ll find our restaurant, so you won’t miss it!
